Social Mention is an application for tracking and analyzing what is being said about a user generated topic. It checks over one hundred social media outlets including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google, and more.
Social Mention was founded in September 2008 by Jon Cianciullo. The site averages about 40,000 unique visitors per month.
Social Mention is one-stop-shopping for researching mentions of individuals, brands, companies, or products across all social media platforms. It makes it easier to track the buzz around the web.
From the home screen, a user simply enters the terms for tracking. The application indicates that it is searching content from “across the universe”. The process takes a few minutes and then a results stream is generated.
The results screen contains a stream of the entries with the mentions as well as several analyses. The “strength” attribute calculates mentions within the last 24 hours divided by the total possible mentions. This indicates the likelihood that the search terms are being discussed. The “sentiment” ratio determines the positive to negative mentions. The “passion” percentage indicates the probability that people will continue talking about the search term. The “reach” is a measure of influence. It divides the number of unique authors by the total mentions.
Other information includes the number of unique authors, number of retweets, top users, keywords, hashtags, sources, and more. Users can refine searches by clicking on some of the links within the results.
Users may also set up alerts that will send email updates based on the user’s search phrase. A real time widget can also be added to blogs or websites with the code provided. Users must simply replace the search terms in the HTML code with their own and then cut and paste the code into their site or blog.
No registration is necessary.
There is no fee associated with using Social Mention.
Anyone wishing to track the mentions of a particular product, company, individual, or other phrase could easily benefit from the information provided by Social Mention.
